Stahmer, Klaus Hinrich
composer, editor
Klaus Hinrich Stahmer, born in Stettin in 1941, studied at Dartington College of Music (England), the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, and the Universities of Hamburg and Kiel. From 1969 to 2004, he was a lecturer (since 1977 a professor) in musicology at the Würzburg University of Music. There, he founded and directed the "Days of New Music" festival (1977–2001) and headed the "Studio for New Music" (1989–2003). His programming was always characterized by a great openness to the music of non-European countries. As a freelance contributor to several radio stations, he regularly produced programs on contemporary music. As a composer, he gave impetus to the development of classical music in the 1980s through his multimedia works (including music with sound sculptures and musical graphics). He also explored new artistic territory with his compositions for non-European instruments, which can be classified as world music. His works increasingly show a shift towards spiritual themes.
